When I first arrived at G Burdett’s, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Although I’ve been in and around the funeral industry (with my dad owning a memorial park) this had been the first time I’d ever experienced what it was actually like to be a funeral director. However, I did know that the job required a more delicate and emotional approach to other jobs I’d done in the past.
The main point I’ve taken from this week is the amount of care, respect and quiet strength goes into supporting a family. Over the course of my week, I’ve definitely gained a new perspective on this profession, as before I’d not realised the amount of work that has to be put in.
At the beginning of my week, I was taught skills such as how to build a coffin and how to dress a deceased which was quite nerve wracking at first as I knew that job held a lot of responsibility. Both Gary and Janice helped me to learn not only how, but why every step is taken to ensure everything is handled with care. At the same time they emphasised that if I was ever uncomfortable with anything, then by no means did I have to do it, which I really appreciated as I was definitely nervous at first.
One of the standout moments of my week was when me and Gary drove down to Devon to collect a deceased. The trip certainly reminded me of the amount of work that’s put into this job, as a 4 am start was definitely not easy for me. Throughout the drive down, Gary answered the multitude of questions that I had asked, fully answering every one to help me fill in any gaps or concerns I had about my week. After many litres of coffee had been consumed, we collected the deceased and headed back up to home. The whole journey opened my eyes to the lengths that the team go to support a family and showed me that funeral care is about more than just what happens locally, it’s about being there for someone whenever you are needed.
Another special moment in my week was meeting Annie and Luna, who are the two funeral home dogs. It’s safe to say they brought a lot of comfort to my week with their calming and gentle presence.
This week has definitely changed the way I see the profession as a funeral director as it’s a lot more than just a job. I’ve learnt how important it is to be kind, calm and thoughtful not only when dealing with people who are facing loss, but just in general. I am so grateful to Gary and Janice for welcoming me with open arms. This experience has taught me lessons I will carry with me for a very long time, and has definitely made me want to go into this industry in the future.
